Driving Home for Christmas

Day 5 of Martin Stone’s #30DayChristmasCardMakingChallenge and we are Driving Home for Christmas. This just brings a sense of warm homecomings and get togethers. Families driving for hours, leaving the stress of work behind to spend some time celebrating Christmas with their loved ones.

I chose the classic car from the Geared Up Garage stamp set and had it driving the snow covered mountains from the Home Together Dies. I die cut the trees a second time from the Snowflake Splendor DSP and glued it on top to add some colour.

To create the trees in the background I inked up the tree from the Winter Woods stamp set in Pool Party ink and spritzed it with a bit of water. Then I stamped it which created a watercolour effect. I stamped a second time without reinking to create lighter coloured trees which looked like they were further in the distance. This step was repeated in Coastal Cabana ink to give variation and depth to the background.

Some additional trees were die cut from ‘Tis the Season DSP. I stamped the sentiment on Coastal Cabana cardstock and layered this on Pool Party cardstock to blend with the trees in the background.

I’ll see you tomorrow for another fun challenge in our 30 day Christmas card marathon. I might get my Christmas cards sorted out early this year!

A Classic Car for the Ladies

The Classic Garage suite – something for every classic car lover, mechanic, motor head in the family. It’s ideal to create those great masculine cards. I’ve created many projects using this suite and find it has some great sentiments as well. However, when I get a stamp set, I try to picture it in a completely different setting or colour scheme to what is mainly being promoted. This makes me think more creatively and work in different colour schemes, giving me more options with stamp sets.

This classic car spoke ‘pink’ to me. Ok, I know it’s my favourite colour but I also chose it because it was so different to the strong colours which I had been previously working with for this set. I thought I really should create this card especially for the ladies.

I have used the Classic Garage Designer Series Paper as my background. The great part of double sided paper is that it has exactly that – 2 sides. The colour palette of this Designer Series Paper is Basic Black, Basic Gray, Crushed Curry, Pumpkin Pie, Real Red, Tranquil Tide, Very Vanilla, Whisper White.  This Basic Gray muted background would work well with many colours and I loved how it looked with my Flirty Flamingo car.

I layered 2 ribbons together to create an accent on this card. The Glittered Organdy Black ribbon has just that enough sparkle for this card for the lady who loves her cars.  The many dies make it easy to create the background with metallic foil.

The sentiment was stamped and punched with the pretty label punch. I created this look by using a shorter piece of cardstock so it squared the top and bottom.  Just like us ladies who love our accessories, the metal key is the perfect accessory to complete the look.

Making a Creative Element Out of a Mistake

A few weeks back we had no electricity for nearly 24 hours and I occupied some of my time by making cards under candlelight. My eyesight is not the greatest at the best of times so candlelight posed an extra challenge for me. I was working with the Classic Garage Suite preparing for blogging, classes and Class in the Mail.

The coordinating colours in the Designer Series Paper are BasicBlack, Basic Gray, Crushed Curry, Pumpkin Pie, Real Red, Tranquil Tide, Very Vanilla and Whisper. However, I wanted to create with a slight different colour palette. So I chose Balmy Blue to work in with Real Red Basic Gray and Whisper White. I stamped, coloured and die cut the pieces and partially assembled the card so I could complete it another day.

The car was coloured with Balmy Blue Stampin’ Blends. Love this colour. I die cut the gears and then used a sponge dauber to add Real Red to it. This gave it a distressed look. And how cute is that little metal key? Each pack of embellishments come with 8 keys and 8 spanners for $12.25. That’s 76 cents each. Cute embellishment to add at not much cost and it finishes the card off nicely.

When I went to add my sentiment I realized that I had stuffed up a bit. So have you spotted my boo boo yet? I mixed Whisper White and Very Vanilla cardstock on the card. The car is stamped on Whisper White and the stripes and sentiment on Very Vanilla. Not a regular combination. Now I did think of fixing it but overall I liked the look of it because I added a little punched piece of Designer Paper which tied in the Very Vanilla nicely. A mistake became something I actually liked.
