Monochromatic Early Espresso – Sepia Technique

Today I shared a card on my Instagram feed for the Crafty Collaborations Monochromatic Insta Hop. We are featuring one of our long-standing neutral colours – Early Espresso. When I saw this week’s colour I immediately knew I was going to share a card using the Sepia technique.

WHAT IS SEPIA TONE?

Sepia is a term generally used in photography where photos are edited/printed in brown, tan and reddish tones. It’s a black and white photo with some warmth added to it. There is a lot more of a technical aspect with the photography side (I’m not a photographer) but this is the basic colour explanation to an amateur such as myself.

I remember my parents’ wedding photo from 62 years ago had a sepia tone. It was not black and white but brown and white. With my card today, I wanted to create the Sepia look using Early Espresso ink. I’ve used the Magnolia Mood bundle from our Online Exclusives range and right now it’s on sale until 30th June for $85.50 (regular price $96.25).

HOW TO CREATE THE FOCAL IMAGE

  • Spritz a sheet of Fluid 100 Cardstock with water
  • Using a Water Painter, paint Early Espresso over the entire piece using the ink refill and lots of water. You want to create a wash over the Cardstock.
  • Leave to dry or use a Heat Tool to dry it well.
  • Stamp the magnolia image with Jet Black Stazon ink
  • Using Early Espresso ink refill and a Water Painter, watercolour the image with a fairly dry brush. This will give you more control over the application of the colour, allowing you to apply dark and light shading.
  • Add a small amount of Pecan Pie in sections to highlight. I did this where I thought the sunlight would hit the image.
  • Allow image to dry completely
  • Add shading with Early Espresso and Basic Black Watercolor Pencils, creating some shadow on the petals and leaves.
  • Once dry, I added some veins on the leaves with a White gel pen.
  • Die cut some additional leaves from Fluid 100 Cardstock (to add behind the main image)
  • Roughly apply Pecan Pie ink refill with a Water Painter. This will give some white space which adds to the texture.

The Embossing Folder I’ve used on the background is called Birch Wood and will be available in our September – December Mini Catalogue. As a demonstrator, I’ve had the opportunity to purchase this and some other products early as part of an Online Event we have coming up. I just had to use it on this card as it looked so pretty with it.

I hope you give this technique a try. It’s a lot of fun and really gives great results. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. Magnolia Mood – Colour Palette #49

Inspired by Colour Palette #49 I’ve created today’s card which uses the Magnolia Mood bundle from our Oneline Exclusives range. If you follow me on Facebook, you will know that I share a new colour palette each Monday for inspiration. You can share what you create using these palettes on my page under the image.

The Magnolia Mood bundle comes with a stamp set and dies which cut out the stamped images as well as individual magnolia dies. I’ve used these individual images as the focal point on my card.

For the Starry Sky element, I blended some Starry Sky ink on a die cut label from the All That dies. These dies are retiring and can be purchased for just $24.50 in our Last Chance sale. Original price was $49. I just love all the unique little dies that come in this set.

Colouring the image with Watercolour Pencils I was able to achieve some beautiful colour variation on the flowers and leaves.

I’m following the sketch at Just Add Ink Challenges #697with the smaller flower making up the little hexagon on the right.

I heat embossed my sentiment in Black to make it stand out against those beautiful colours.

Thank you for stopping by and checking out my card. For more inspiration, join me tonight at 7:30pm for my weekly Live on my Facebook Page.

Baby Wipe Technique – Magnolia Mood Bundle

Last week I tried out a variation on the Baby Wipe Technique and created a range of backgrounds. I played around with various colours and came up with a few different options. For this particular base I used Bubble Bath, Highland Heather and Melon Mambo.

BABY WIPE TECHNIQUE VARIATION

You will need a couple of baby wipes which you fold into 1/8 (roughly) to form a small ink pad. Drop the ink refill colour of your choice onto the baby wipe. Gentle wipe it in circular motion onto a piece of Fluid 100 Cardstock. Apply the colour to different sections.

Continue with the other colours until you get a blended look.

Freshly Made Sketches, FMS629

I’ve followed the sketch at Freshly Made Sketches #fms629 and used the Magnolia Mood bundle to complete my card.

Stamping the image in Stazon ink, I watercoloured the image with a range of ink refills including Shy Shamrock which is part of the 2024-2026 In-Color range.

For the top part of the sketch I fussy cut a piece of Masterfully Made Designer Series Paper. Under it I added an embossed piece of White Cardstock which had been die cut with the Gorgeously Made dies. On the Thick White card base, I added another piece of White Cardstock exactly the same size which was embossed with the Timeworn Type Embossing Folder. I find that embossing the card base can warp the card front so I prefer to add that extra layer.

Check out the Online Exclusives range in my Online Store to see lots of other products which you won’t find in any of our catalogues. It’s an additional shopping experience.

Monochromatic Tahitian Tide – Magnolia Mood bundle

Welcome to another Crafty Collaborations Monochromatic Challenge. This week we are focussing on Tahitian Tide. Just a fwe days ago I received some new products from the Online Exclusives collection which will be released on 5th March. So I chose to use some of these on today’s card.

I generally like to pair a neutral colour with the featured colour when I’m creating for these monochromatic challenges. Black just seemed a little harsh with the idea I had in mind and I ended up choosing Night of Navy as what I call a ‘support’ colour!

I started off with the 3 squares and stamped the Drizzling Droplets background stamp on the smaller squares. This is one of the new products you can order on the 5th. Against the central embossed square, the small dots brought a touch of softness to the layout.

For my featured image I used the Magnolia Mood bundle. I didn’t quite like the floral image that was attached to the stamped leaves so I just trimmed that out and added a different die cut on top. The Tahitian Tide flower is an outline and I glued this onto Night of Navy Cardstock and fussy cut around it to give me a two-tone flower.

A product list is at the bottom of this post to help you place your order. I will update it on the 5th of March to include the new products.

Thank you for stopping by and I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
