Tarnished Foil Technique in any Colour
Tarnished foil technique – a technique I have admired since I first saw it but I only tried it out a couple of weeks ago and boy, do I love it! So effective and I just love that I can mess about with it and it all looks fantastic.
So, this card came about as a bit of an experiment. I wanted to try Tarnished Foil technique, Rochelle style, with coloured ink pads. I used Champagne foil as my base. Firstly, I embossed the foil cardstock and proceeded to go through the steps.

I got to work with Versamark and Copper embossing powder as per the usual Tarnished Foil technique which I first saw shared by Melissa Kerman. Here is where I decided to deviate from the instructions! I randomly dabbed on Call Me Clover in parts of the embossed panel. This of course gave me very colourful fingers as it’s water based ink (The original technique is done in Stazon). I did run the Stazon pad down the card stock after the entire process. Although the ink was wiping off, I loved the look and there was no turning back. This had been sitting on my desk for 2 weeks in it’s incomplete state Then I picked it up a couple of days ago and of course my fingers were green again. My experiment had a small hitch which I needed to fix – the colour was wiping off.
Sometimes sitting on projects for a few days gives you thinking time and that’s what happened. I applied my Versamark pad over the entire piece, put Clear embossing powder and heat embossed it. This made it touch proof. Do this step a couple of times if need be. You may be thinking ‘her Versamark pad is stained for life’. I only used a corner of the pad and then wiped it off on a piece of paper. So, although it is stained, the colour doesn’t come onto other projects. I would recommend having 2 Versamark ink pads. One for ‘clean’ projects such as watermark and basic stamping, and then one for all other projects such as this.
The card base is Garden Green and the Delicately Detailed Laser Cut DSP adds a lovely border in Very Vanilla. This paper matches many projects because it’s Whisper White on one side and Very Vanilla on the other.
I didn’t want too much added onto the card as I really loved the foil. The tag is from the new Tags & Tidings bundle which is 1 stamp and die set. It cuts 16 tags in one go and is a time saver. I coloured it in with the Light Crumb Cake Stampin’ Blend. I attached this to a label, punched from the Frosted Floral DSP which is my new favourite DSP. A few embellishments and this creates an elegant Christmas card.
