AWOW Blog Hop – Faux Torn Paper Technique This or That

Welcome to the first 2026 Around the World on Wednesday (AWOW) blog hop. January continues with our Caseing a Team Member theme and this month we are Caseing Jan Clothier who is from New Zealand. Jan has a technique that she shares in various ways on her cards called the Faux Torn Paper Mask background technique with a This or That element thrown in as well.

As I scoured through Jan’s blog, there were so many beautiful ways she has depicted this but I couldn’t go past this card. Firstly, I just loved the colours and secondly it had beachy images which I love. Click on the image of the card to see the details of how Jan created it.

I took inspiration from Jan’s card, following the colour palette and some elements and then adding my style to it. \

I’ve used the exclusive stamp set in the Virtual Card Making Retreat Kit to create my collage background and focal images.

THIS

I started by tearing the edge of Masking Paper to help me create the division for my ink blending. For the ombre look I blended Summer Splash, Azure Afternoon and Secret Sea. The script was stamped in Summer Splash on the right (althought it’s not so visible on this photo). Then I stamped the leaves in Secret Sea followed with gold embossed lines. This is a long image which I partially inked up with Versamark so I could place it on different sections of the open area. Once this was complete, I removed the Masking Paper – this is such a fun reveal – every time!

The flowers and leaves were coloured in Stampin’ Blends. I chose Melon Mambo because I don’t use it very often and it added a lovely pop of colour against the blues.

THAT

For my next card, I used the same strip of Masking Paper, adding blending in Summer Splash and Azure Afternoon. One one side, I stamped the leaves in Summer Splash. The centre of a flower adds some soft Azure Afternoon dots.

These flowers were watercoloured in Melon Mambo giving me control over the intensity of the colour. To create the leaves, I spritzed the Fluid 100 Cardstock with water and once semi dry, stamped the leaf image in Lemon Lime Twist, which gave it an organic look. The little flowers were coloured the same way with Summer Splash. These dies are from the bundle which is in the Virtual Cardmaking Retreat Kit.

The Perfectly Pears dies provided me the detailed die which replicated the silver net die Jan’s card. This, along with the sparkling gems, added the finishing touches to this card.

Let me know, which of these is your favourite? This or That?

Thank you for stopping by and I hope you have been inspired to give this fun technique a try. Please click on the Next Blog button to see Cheryll Miller’s beautiful project.

  1. Hey Rochelle, Two gorgeous cards, showcasing Jan’s faux paper tearing technique brilliantly. I do love the landscape card with the more turquoise hues. That pop of pink and the dramatic sentiment is really stunning.

  2. Both of these are fabulous cards, Rochelle. I love the colours you’ve picked with the bright Lemon Lime Twist and Melon Mambo popping out of the blues. The idea of masking off the faux edge on a circle adds a nice dimension. I have done this method with the addition of embossing as you have done and it’s always spectacular. I couldn’t possibly pick a favourite. 🙂
