Fun Ways with Designer Series Paper – Part 1

Welcome to a short series I’m running on some fun ways to to get the best use of your Stampin’ Up! Designer Series Paper. During my Fun Ways with Designer Series Paper series I’m going to share with you a few basics that help me when it comes to using up my beautiful Designer Series Paper or DSP as it’s known for short.

Cut it

It may seem the obvious thing to do but just glance at your paper shelves or drawers. If you are anything like me, you may be holding onto special paper for a special project. I see you nodding your head!

Every catalogue, Stampin’ Up! brings the most beautiful Designer Series Paper in the papercraft world. Now, we all just LOVE patterned paper so we just NEED to have it. So, don’t hoard that paper because there is plenty more where that came from and you know what? When you use that special paper on a card and give it to someone, you make that person really happy.

The main tool you require for this will be a Paper Trimmer in order to get straight and accurate cuts. This is a must have tool in your craft room and it will serve you well.

Paper Trimmer

I generally cut half a pack of 12″x12″ DSP into 9.9cm x 14.2cm pieces. This is my Basic Cut 1. Once the DSP is cut, then it’s more convenient and ready to use on your cards. I leave the rest as full sheets which allows for 3D or scrapbook projects or larger cards. There are a few basic measurements that I follow but for today I’ll be sharing 2 with you.

Basic card measurement for an A6 card (half of an A4 sheet which is then folded in half)
CARD BASE
21cm x 14.8cm scored in half (opens to the side) or 10.5cm x 29.6cm scored in half (opens upwards)

BASIC CUT 1
9.9cm x 14.2cm DSP

Here I’ve used the Snowflake Wonder Designer Series Paper on my base. Then I’ve added another piece of DSP layered onto cardstock which I’ve added the deer onto. The doily was coloured in with the Night of Navy Stampin’ Blend to coordinate with the rest of my card.

BASIC CUT 2
9.3cm x 13.6cm DSP
9.9cm x 14.2cm matte layer (cardstock)

When you have beautiful paper, you don’t need to do much to your card. This is the Magic in this Night Designer Series Paper which you can find on Page 62 of your catalogue. Teamed up with a Halloween suite, it’s quite easy to miss the magic of this paper, This paper has elegant black roses and spider webs that actually look like crocheted doilies.

Once you have your main layers cut, then you can start cutting them down and moving them around. This piece of ‘Tis the Season Designer Series Paper is 13.6cm x 9.3cm. I then cut it at the 5cm mark on the short side, reversing one side to show both sides of the beautiful paper. That beautiful Shaded Spruce ribbon covers the join of the paper. I edged the postage stamp with the Dark Cherry Cobble Stampin’ Blend to form a border around it.

This card uses Heartwarming Hug Designer Series Paper which has been cut at the 5cm mark on the long side. Once again, some ribbon covers the join. I’ve used the ‘Direct to Stamp’ Technique with my Stampin’ Write Markers to create the tag. You can colour directly on the stamp with these markers and then breathe on it to activate the ink. Stamp as usual and this gives you a beautiful coloured image.

I hope this inspires you to get a trimmer and start cutting your papers. If you would like more inspiration, make sure you sign up to my newsletter. This week’s issue will have 4 tutorials for you to use with Designer Series Paper giving you some alternative cards to the ones I shared with you today.

Two simple measurements but so many ways to use them. I hope you give it a try and please leave me a comment if you find this helpful or if you have any questions. All the DSP I have shown you today are on sale during our October DSP sale. Stamp 'n Hop October 2020, Favourite DSP

So what is DSP? It’s Stampin’ Up! lingo for patterned paper and stands for Designer Series Paper. Our Designer Series Paper range is double-sided to give you more choice and it’s a nice thicker paper which allows you more creative possibilities.

There are so many beautiful papers and it’s always a difficult decision to make as to which one is my favourite. So, I chose one that has recently caught my eye. I must tell you that when I first saw the Plaid Tidings DSP in the Mini Holiday Catalogue, it didn’t really grab me but when I got it in my hands it was an entirely different story. I love the different colour combinations that are available making it really easy to create projects for a number of occasions. There’s bright colours, muted tones and even black and white which gives you lots of creative possibilities.

Plaid Tidings DSP

Today, I have paired the Plaid Tidings Designer Series Paper with the Press On stamp set. This is a fun stamp set with cute images and sentiments which are great for coffee lovers however it could be easily adapted to hold a hot chocolate!

This sheet of paper really pulled towards the Oranges but I just thought I’d give Old Olive a try. I love how, together with the Granny Apple Green cup, it really brought out the colour of the DSP. The black circle has been punched from the Magic in this Night DSP.

I’ve kept my cards simple in layout to let the colours of the paper really show through. This next card has a colour combination of Melon Mambo, Merry Merlot and Daffodil Delight. I’m loving the bright colours of this plaid sheet. Some simple colouring highlights the stamped image.

Another great sheet from this pack, in Pretty Peacock. The sentiment is a separate stamp so you can add that on any cup. I stamped ribbon with Cinnamon Cider coffee beans for a custom look.

Just think of all the possibilities with stamped ribbons!
