Ornamental Christmas Card in Non-Traditional Colours

The Ornamental Christmas Bundle is part of the Modern Christmas suite which was released in the September Online Exclusives. It has beautiful Black & White Specialty Designer Series Paper which has gold foil detail on one side. The stamps and dies offer lots of ways to vary your creations with some added bonus dies which work independently of the stamp set.

Color Throwdown #ctd841 terra cotta, navy, pale blue

I was inspired by these colours at the Color Throwsdown Challenge CTD841 which I substituted for our Stampin’ Up! colours of Cajun Craze, Night of Navy and Balmy Blue.

As I saw this colour palette I knew I wanted to create a card with the Modern Christmas suite. The rustic colours just inspired me.

I started by heat embossing the trees onto the Everyday Skies Designer Series Paper. This technique not only adds a lovely raised texture but also allows the subtle background design of the paper to peek through. The light pattern gives just the right amount of extra detail, creating a beautiful contrast and added interest behind the die cut images.

For the card base, I selected another sheet from the Everyday Skies Designer Series Paper and ran it through the Peaceful Greenery 3D Embossing Folder. This instantly gave the background a beautiful, raised texture. To enhance the embossed detail, I blended Cajun Craze ink over the surface, allowing the colour to catch on the raised areas. Finally, a few splatters added that extra depth and texture, giving the background a rich, layered look that ties the whole design together.

Tips for Creating This Card

  1. Embossed Backgrounds Add Depth
Using an embossing folder on your background cardstock instantly adds texture and interest. Here, the leafy design creates a festive feel that frames the rest of the card beautifully.
  2. Use Sections of Embossing Folders
You don’t always need to emboss the whole card front. Try using just part of the folder—like one side of a frame—to create a textured border. On this card, the embossing along the top edge adds interest while keeping the focus on the main design.
  3. Heat Emboss on DSP
Embossing the trees on the Everyday Skies Designer Series Paper lets the subtle pattern peek through the gold embossing. This technique is a great way to get more use out of your DSP and create unique die cut images.
  4. Mix Bold & Neutral Patterns
Pairing the black-and-white geometric strip with the embossed background balances the design—adding a pop of contrast without overpowering the focal point.
  5. Cluster Your Elements
The sentiment, trees, and embellishments are grouped closely together, drawing the eye to the center of the card. This creates a strong focal point while leaving the background to complement the scene.
  6. Add Metallic Accents
The gold stars and heat-embossed details bring in shimmer and make the card feel extra festive. Metallics are always a good choice for Christmas projects.
  7. Tie it Together with Twine
A simple twine bow softens the design and adds a handmade touch while grounding the layers.
