Today is the final in my series on Fun Ways with Designer Series Paper. There are several more that I could share but I’ve chosen one to highlight that you would have seen throughout this series. Layer your DSP to create coordinated projects. Use the sheets from the same pack to make it even easier to coordinate. Adding layers can make your focal elements really stand out and also adds depth to projects.
Layer it up
Use your Designer Series Paper as a matte layer or on top of a cardstock layer. Layering different patterns which complement each other creates beautiful effects.
On this Christmas card I used the classic gingham design as my background and then matte a layer with all the woodland animals in the foreground.
A deer from the North Pole Wonder die cut from Cinnamon Cider Velveteen Paper was added to match the DSP.
This is another simple card which, this time, uses the In Good Taste DSP as the matte layer. I added a bold sentiment from the fun Ridiculously Awesome stamp set.
A bit of sponging in Balmy Blue, a bow, a few sequins and this is a quick make card. Don’t miss out the DSP sale which ends 31st October. Grab yourself a bargain, shop a gift for a friend, stock up and save. All orders over $50 are eligible for Stamping Flair Loyalty Points.

Punch it Out!
Using punches on Designer Series Paper is yet another fun and effective way to create with it. Many of the Stampin’ Up! papers have images that can can be punched out with it’s coordinating punch. On the Whale of a Time Designer Series Paper the whale can be easily punched out with the coordinating Whale Punch for a quick focal image.
I added some stamping and a scalloped border for a quick yet fun card. This scalloped border was made a while ago and I found it in my stash but I couldn’t remember which die I had used. I looked for about 10 minutes in my dies and the catalogue and could not work out which one it was. Then I realized that it was actually a piece of DSP that I had fussy cut a wave from and this was the leftover piece. So, I tricked myself to think it was a die cut!
A pop of colour with the Melon Mambo scalloped circle makes this a sweet card to send anyone ‘just because’.

What’s fussy cutting? It’s the art of cutting around the shapes on the Designer Series Paper. That’s right, it’s the fancy way of saying cut out the shape. You have been doing it since kindergarten so embrace it and enjoy it. It opens up a whole new world of crafting.
I’ve got a little story to share with you. At my work, my boss thinks I’m good at wrapping presents so every time he’s got to go for a function or a birthday, yours truly has the job of wrapping the present. All I have at work is scissors and wrapping paper and with a little bit of luck, some curling ribbon. So for me, that’s a really meagre supply. Last week’s task was a child’s birthday present with some wrapping paper that had owls on it. After I had added ribbon on the gift I just felt it needed a bit more. So my fussy cutting skills came into play and I cut out one of the owls, added it onto some thick paper, rolled some sticky tape under it and there you have it, a cute gift embellishment. Fussy cutting put to practical use!
For some simple fussy cutting, I just love the Poinsettia Place Designer Series Paper. Large flowers that can form the focal image on a card create a quick design. Here I’ve coloured in some leaves in Old Olive and Mint Macaron Stampin’ Blends to add to it. The Woodlands Embossing Folder adds some extra texture to the Whisper White background.
The Playful Pets Designer Series Paper is another great set for fussy cutting. It gives you several cute cats and dogs with such different expressions.

Welcome to a short series I’m running on some fun ways to to get the best use of your Stampin’ Up! Designer Series Paper. During my Fun Ways with Designer Series Paper series I’m going to share with you a few basics that help me when it comes to using up my beautiful Designer Series Paper or DSP as it’s known for short.
Cut it
It may seem the obvious thing to do but just glance at your paper shelves or drawers. If you are anything like me, you may be holding onto special paper for a special project. I see you nodding your head!
Every catalogue, Stampin’ Up! brings the most beautiful Designer Series Paper in the papercraft world. Now, we all just LOVE patterned paper so we just NEED to have it. So, don’t hoard that paper because there is plenty more where that came from and you know what? When you use that special paper on a card and give it to someone, you make that person really happy.
The main tool you require for this will be a Paper Trimmer in order to get straight and accurate cuts. This is a must have tool in your craft room and it will serve you well.
I generally cut half a pack of 12″x12″ DSP into 9.9cm x 14.2cm pieces. This is my Basic Cut 1. Once the DSP is cut, then it’s more convenient and ready to use on your cards. I leave the rest as full sheets which allows for 3D or scrapbook projects or larger cards. There are a few basic measurements that I follow but for today I’ll be sharing 2 with you.
Basic card measurement for an A6 card (half of an A4 sheet which is then folded in half) CARD BASE 21cm x 14.8cm scored in half (opens to the side) or 10.5cm x 29.6cm scored in half (opens upwards)
BASIC CUT 1 9.9cm x 14.2cm DSP
Here I’ve used the Snowflake Wonder Designer Series Paper on my base. Then I’ve added another piece of DSP layered onto cardstock which I’ve added the deer onto. The doily was coloured in with the Night of Navy Stampin’ Blend to coordinate with the rest of my card.
BASIC CUT 2 9.3cm x 13.6cm DSP 9.9cm x 14.2cm matte layer (cardstock)
When you have beautiful paper, you don’t need to do much to your card. This is the Magic in this Night Designer Series Paper which you can find on Page 62 of your catalogue. Teamed up with a Halloween suite, it’s quite easy to miss the magic of this paper, This paper has elegant black roses and spider webs that actually look like crocheted doilies.
Once you have your main layers cut, then you can start cutting them down and moving them around. This piece of ‘Tis the Season Designer Series Paper is 13.6cm x 9.3cm. I then cut it at the 5cm mark on the short side, reversing one side to show both sides of the beautiful paper. That beautiful Shaded Spruce ribbon covers the join of the paper. I edged the postage stamp with the Dark Cherry Cobble Stampin’ Blend to form a border around it.
This card uses Heartwarming Hug Designer Series Paper which has been cut at the 5cm mark on the long side. Once again, some ribbon covers the join. I’ve used the ‘Direct to Stamp’ Technique with my Stampin’ Write Markers to create the tag. You can colour directly on the stamp with these markers and then breathe on it to activate the ink. Stamp as usual and this gives you a beautiful coloured image.
I hope this inspires you to get a trimmer and start cutting your papers. If you would like more inspiration, make sure you sign up to my newsletter. This week’s issue will have 4 tutorials for you to use with Designer Series Paper giving you some alternative cards to the ones I shared with you today.
Two simple measurements but so many ways to use them. I hope you give it a try and please leave me a comment if you find this helpful or if you have any questions. All the DSP I have shown you today are on sale during our October DSP sale. There’s a total of 15 papers in the range which you will want to stock up on as there are so many beautiful designs in them.
